Become a Trainer or Assessor with SLSSA!
Join the Lifesaving Education Team
Are you passionate about surf lifesaving and education?
Have you ever considered sharing your knowledge and experience to help shape the next generation of surf lifesavers?
Now is your chance to take the next step in your surf lifesaving journey by becoming a Trainer or Assessor with Surf Life Saving South Australia (SLSSA)!
Cassie Wilmot, Goolwa SLSC trainer, completed the Assessor Skill Set course last year, which has allowed her to step into the role of an Assessor. “I love training and sharing knowledge. Then, when a rescue occurs, to hear the members say, ‘I used everything I learnt’ and ‘what you taught me helped me save a life’ is incredibly rewarding.”
“During my 10+ years of being a trainer, I’ve found it’s been hard to constantly ask for assessors for my squads. There is definitely a need for more assessors in this space, and I felt I had the experience and knowledge to assess. So, considering the new assessor course changes and updates to the training, plus the time of year it was being offered, I decided it was time to pop my hand up for it.
The course itself was great! There is minimal homework and everything was able to be completed in the allocated face-to-face time, which meant once we committed to those six full days, we didn’t require much more outside the time, which helps in the business of life!”
Why should you consider getting involved in the education space in Surf Life Saving?
Working as a volunteer Trainer or Assessor within SLSSA offers a unique and rewarding opportunity to contribute to the lifesaving community. By becoming part of our education team, you will be directly involved in developing and delivering the skills and knowledge associated with the different SLS Awards needed to keep our beaches safe.
As a Trainer, you'll have the opportunity to:
Make an Impact
Inspire the Next Generation
Build Valuable Skills
Give Back to the Community
Becoming a Trainer or an Assessor not only provides personal and professional growth, but it also helps strengthen our lifesaving network. It’s an incredibly fulfilling way to contribute to your community while honing your own skill set.

Murray Bridge Life Saving Club endorsed to be a “Club” affiliated with SLSSA
In exciting news, the Board of SLSSA have endorsed the Murray Bridge Life Saving Club to be a “Club” affiliated with SLSSA under the category of Probationary Affiliation, the first of its kind here in South Australia.
This is an important first for our organisation as we look to achieve our vision of zero preventable drowning deaths in South Australian waters. Importantly this step helps us to realise the strategic ambitions we have to achieve zero preventable drowning deaths, grow our active membership, enable every child across the state to access training, education and water safety and move to be the most trusted brand in SA.
The River Murray is an identified blackspot for drowning, but was also recently part of the widespread flooding through a lot of our State. The significance of the establishment of this Club not only allows us to fiercely pursue our vision and agreed strategy, but it allows us to be better prepared as an Emergency Service to have increased capability and capacity at times of flooding and natural disasters. The Murray is open and flowing water and so the qualification framework and awards are as per our existing policies and frameworks.
The Murray Bridge LSC demonstrated they had far exceeded the requirements for probationary affiliation, some of which included;
Establishing and endorsing a Club Constitution
Having an active and effective Board of Directors
Registered their business name and ABN, achieved Incorporated Status and registered with ACNC
Established bank accounts
Generating income, including fundraising and sponsorship
Having the full support of the Council and elected Members to establish this Club and be a critical part of their community going forward
Successfully delivered rippers to 75 children in their first summer and 87 in their second year
A Membership list of approximately 100 members
Volunteer members holding a number of SLS awards (BM, SRC, Trainer, etc) with another 12 to undertake training
Identified and negotiated a space to utilise as their “clubrooms” as needed
Were the inaugural winners for the inland State Championships with 35 competitors travelling to Lake Bonney
Probationary Affiliation at this stage of the Murray Bridge Life Saving Club journey gives them the greatest chance of success and sustainability. Importantly, the Board and membership base includes surf life savers, old and current members and so they have a good sense of what is needed and when.
We know you will join with us in congratulating the Murray Bridge Life Saving Club and their dedicated team of volunteers, they have achieved so much in a short period of time.
